On the Slow Carb Diet, your options are pretty limited when eating out. Not being able to eat white or processed carbs, dairy or fruit can put a real dent in the menu.
A cuisine that does lend itself well to Slow Carb is Mexican. Most burrito places now do a ‘Burrito Bowl’ option, then it’s just a case of swapping out the rice for veggies or more beans and then staying away from the sour cream and cheese.
I found myself hungry and walking past a branch of Poncho 8 this lunchtime, and a decent sized queue told me that this was a place worth checking out.
I had one of their salad boxes with Poncho’s Pork and extra guacamole. I swapped out the rice for extra beans (which was no problem), and then kicked myself because I didn’t notice the veggies which I should have had instead!
They certainly weren’t shy with the portions and the box filled me up nicely. The flavours were very good, particularly the pork with had a nice tomato / spicy / smoky sauce on it. The pork was also lovely and moist, so a double plus. The rest of the ingredients were obviously fresh, the Pico de Gallo had a zing to it, and the spicy salsa was hot enough for me, though as I’m a bit of a hot wimp nowadays may not be enough punch for some. The lettuce was obviously fresh, and as someone who used to work in the produce industry, pink edges on lettuce is something I notice right away!
All in all, a good, filling lunch for £7.50. They don’t have a branch near me on a regular lunchtime, but I’d certainly happily visit again if I saw one.
No pictures I’m afraid, too hungry!
